SHEENA AND THE ROKKETS – YOU MAY DREAM (1979)

lyrics by TOSHIYUKI SHIBAYAMA / CHRIS MODELL |
music by MAKOTO AYUKAWA / HARUOMI HOSONO

Perhaps the most famous Sheena and the Rokkets song, for good reason – YMO-adjacent Chris Modell (lyricist and poet, famous for writing many of YMO’s English lyrics) and synthpop extraordinaire Haruomi Hosono both support the already talented members of the Rokkets in composing this song.

The title of the song is a clever pun – ‘you may’ sounds like the Japanese word for dream – yume, and so “You May Dream” works as both a phrase in English but also as ‘Yume dream’ in Japanese. This also comes into play with the chorus of the song.

Translation and notes under the cut:

When I think of you
My heart grows much hotter
And even on those constant sad rainy days
I can hear that samba rhythm

Sending a crystal boat
Out on the lake covered in morning mist
We exchange a kiss
That feels like we’re touching

SO IF YOU LOVE ME
COME UP AND SEE ME AFTER DARK
YOUR NAME IS CARVED ON MY HEART
FOR YOU I RESERVED A DREAM

This is my wonderful dream
This is my wonderful dream
You may, you may, you may

AND YOU MAY DREAM TONIGHT
WHEN YOU TURN OUT THE LIGHT
OF A GIRL IN THE ARMS OF A HERO
LIKE VALENTINO (1)
WELL – HEY! THAT LUCKY GIRL’S ME

This is my wonderful dream
This is my wonderful dream
You may, you may, you may

1: I assume this refers to Rudolph Valentino, early Italian motion picture actor and sex symbol.
