FUBIKI KOSHIJI – HYMNE À L’AMOUR [AI NO SANKA] (1951)

lyrics by TOKIKO IWATANI / EDITH PIAF | music by MARGUERITE MONNOT

I got turned onto this because of Jun Togawa’s cover on Jun Togawa avec Kei Ookubo, which is out now and you should really purchase.

This is a cover of an Edith Piaf song, which you might think wouldn’t be that different from the original, but you would be surprised! This makes me even sadder than the original does.

Translation and notes under the cut:

With your hands burning
Hold me in your arms
I want to live
Just the two of us
I want to love you
For as long as I live
And for as long as I live
I will love you

Drawing our cheeks together
Our kiss burning
Happiness exchanged
If we, you and I
Could live together
I’d need nothing else
I’d need nothing else
I’ll live
Together with you
My wish is this and this alone
To be together with you

Holding each other tight
While we entwine our fingers, burning
In each other’s hair
While so in love
We exchange a kiss
Love is a fire burning
A flame that sets you ablaze
A love that dissolves my heart
