TOGAWA JUN UNIT – CATTLE STRAITS [KACHIKU KAIKYOU] (1985)

lyrics and music by JUN TOGAWA

Potentially one of the more foreboding songs in Togawa’s catalog musically. The lyrics are about the monotony of working daily, which the title also seems to echo – it reads like animals being herded into a channel.

An earlier version of this, entitled “G,” can be found on Togawa Legend Disc 3, with modified lyrics.

Translation and notes under the cut:

One
In the land of the people (1)
I FEEL LIKE A CATTLE GIRL
I work every day like a pig
While I cry

Two
Whipped by wind and wave
I FEEL LIKE A CATTLE GIRL
Gazing at the freezing sea
I work every day

Three
Having crossed the mountain recesses
I FEEL LIKE A CATTLE GIRL
A voice calls like a parent’s would
And it rushes through my arteries

Four
Detained with a rope
I FEEL LIKE A CATTLE GIRL
I work every day
Until I cut through it and go home

Five
No matter how much time may pass
I FEEL LIKE A CATTLE GIRL
I must not forget my days of suffering
In the cattle straits

1: The word “people” is written with the kanji for “stranger.”
