DENKI GROOVE – N.O. (1994)

lyrics and music by TAKKYU ISHINO

There’s a translation of this song floating around on the Internet already, but I wasn’t happy with it, so I decided I’d try my hand at it, partially because I don’t want to only post Togawa content here.

This was one of Denki Groove’s biggest hits, reaching #6 on the Oricon and living in pop culture afterwards. More modern weebs would probably know them for doing the opening theme for Devilman Crybaby, which is actually pretty good.

Translation and notes are under the cut:

It’s not a secret that I can’t tell you now
But if it’s possible I’d prefer not to say it
Because even if I say it now there isn’t anything I can do
But I can’t do anything about how much I want to say it either

I have no school
I have no family
I have no free time
And no curtains
I don’t even have a vase to put flowers in
I don’t hate it
It’s just embarrassing

Even though I understand there’s nothing I can do
Somewhere there’s something that’s unaccounted for
And because when I think about the future I get anxious
I don’t do anything where I am now but sleep

I have no school
I have no family
I have no free time
And no curtains
I don’t even have a vase to put flowers in
I don’t hate it
It’s just embarrassing

The words I say are extremely positive
But the brain I think with is extremely negative
And the stupid youth are extremely active
And you click your tongue and glance sideways at it

I have no school
I have no family
I have no free time
And no curtains
I don’t even have a vase to put flowers in
I don’t hate it
It’s just embarrassing…
