URBANGARDE – ATASHI FICTION (2018)

lyrics by TEMMA MATSUNAGA | music by YOKO HAMASAKI

The lead single off Urbangarde’s latest album, Shojo Fiction.

Translation and notes under the cut:

I’m still fiction
Fiction only for you
A substitute for someone else
Who is it that you loved?

Forever and ever, I’m still fiction
Fiction only for you
Not a replacement for someone else
Fall in love with me

Once I was a girl; once I was a young lady
My true form is nothing but a song
Once I was a puppet, Cinderella, a mermaid
If you sing for me, I can be me

But sometimes my tears, they flow down
The day where you’ll forget my song is surely coming soon!
I’m already fiction
Fiction only for you
Like a turntable’s needle
Our lips will meet

Hey, listen
I’m already fiction
What you loved is fiction
I can’t be anything but a voice
Fall in love with me
Once I was God, once I was a slave
The blood of the Doremifa Girl roars (1)

Cable broadcast across wireless LAN
Can you hear it? You can hear it, can’t you
The echoing of the soul of the words

I’m still fiction
Fiction only for you
And when the record stops
Our lips will part

Forever and ever, I’m still fiction
Lonely fiction
And even if love vanishes
And even if my voice vanishes
The song alone will remain
And I’ll be fiction

1: A reference to the 1985 film The Excitement of the Do-Re-Mi-Fa Girl, known in Japanese as ドレミファ娘の血は騒ぐ, the plot of which is summarized as such: “A country girl visits Tokyo in search of her college heartthrob. Here she meets horny students, a psychology professor in search of the theory of shame, and Yoshioka who has become a campus nobody.”
