TOGAWA JUN UNIT – A PROMISE TO DREAM [YUME MIRU YAKUSOKU] (1985)

lyrics and music by HARUOMI HOSONO

Thematically distinct from much of Far Eastern Comfort Songs, this song feels much more at home on Tamahime-sama. Most likely, this is due to the synth edge on Hosono’s production and music, which is more out of place compared to “Untitled” or even “Half-Life.”

Hosono has also produced a version of his own, with tighter (in my opinion) instrumentation.

Translation and notes under the cut:

A beautiful promise by two to dream
Going to that city to look for the blue sky
I draw close to you as you’re moved to tears
Over the spring sun, so long unseen, we count the wispy clouds
How embarrassing

The end of the sky for the two lovers dreaming
Standing on the edge of that cliff to look for devotion
A future where I can rest my hands on your shoulder
And pray, as you smile and say, “I really love leaves”
How embarrassing

If I’m with you it’s always happy and cheerful and fresh
Picnic, Picnic
Beating fast is the rhythm of my heart, cheerful and fresh
Platonic, Platonic LOVE

As we walk the ridge the evening sun shines in the sky
Goodbye to the setting sun, a field of shimmering grass
Yes, let’s sit down there and listen to the sound of the wind
To rest my head in your lap feels good
How embarrassing

A beautiful promise by two to dream
Going to that city to look for the blue sky
I draw close to you as you’re moved to tears
Over the spring sun, so long unseen, we count the wispy clouds
How embarrassing

If I’m with you it’s always happy and cheerful and fresh
Picnic, Picnic
Beating fast is the rhythm of my heart, cheerful and fresh
Platonic, Platonic LOVE
