YAPOOS – GILGAMESH (1991)

lyrics by JUN TOGAWA | music by YOSHIRO YOSHIKAWA

Another standout track off the seminal Turn the Y Dial! (Daiyaru Y wo Mawase!). This has become a staple of her live shows as of late. Most likely, it’s about an abusive relationship that neither party wants to leave, even though they both understand it’s mutually destructive.

Translation and notes under the cut:

A man disparaging me as Wanda in Furs
And I, speaking ill with a name – “Gilgamesh”
Even if we are simply together
Even then the days are like torture
We grow ugly with hatred and jealousy
How far will we fall?
But even so, we cannot let go
Since the first time we met, during an autumn so many years ago

I respected Gilgamesh
The epic of Caesar
I believed in it when we met
I didn’t see anything but wonders
The loveliness of Bilitis
The earnestness of Ophelia
The time we met
Ah, was it like that?
Was I really able to love you?

A dark dinner, like a Sabbat
Two people, called a witch and a tyrant
A rotten relationship is not so peaceful
One would call it inert
We grow ugly with hatred and jealousy
How far will we fall?
But even so, we cannot let go
We grow ugly with hatred and jealousy
We cannot let go
I want to reincarnate and once more
Meet you on an autumn day
When even the dead leaves still live

The loveliness of Bilitis
The earnestness of Ophelia
Is to have sympathy natural?
Did we treat it that importantly?

I respected Gilgamesh
The epic of Caesar
I believed in it when we met
I didn’t do anything but love you
I respected Gilgamesh
The epic of Caesar
I believed in it when we met…
