PLASTICS – COPY (1979)

lyrics by TOSHI | music by HAJIME

Perhaps the most famous Japanese New Wave band, Plastics caught the attention of members of Talking Heads and The B-52s, who helped them to secure an American distribution deal. Their debut, Welcome Plastics, was ranked by Rolling Stone as one of the top 20 Japanese albums ever. And then, just like that, after extensive touring in the USA – it had all fallen apart by 1981.

Translation and notes are under the cut:

Copy, copy
Everything’s a copy
Copy, copy
All throughout the city
Copy, copy
Everyone’s a copy
Copy, copy
Tokyo copy town

This and that, all just copies
Originality 99 (1)
Copy people C-O-P-Y
Copy this and copy that

Copy, copy
At work, copy
Copy, copy
All at once, copy
Copy, copy
The so-called copy
Copy, copy
Tokyo copy town

This and that, all just copies
Originality 99
Copy people C-O-P-Y
Copy this and copy that

Copy, copy
We’re just copy machines
Copy, copy
As you’d expect, copies
Copy, copy
Glittering copies
Copy, copy
Tokyo copy town

This and that, all just copies
Originality 9999999999
Copy people C-O-P-Y
Copy this and copy that
Copy copy copy copy
Copy copy copy copy

1: A pun, as ‘nine’ in English sounds like nai in Japanese (無い), which means ‘none.’
