YAPOOS – UNDERNEATH RED FLOWERS IN FULL BLOOM [AKAI HANA NO MANKAI NO SHITA] (1995)

lyrics by JUN TOGAWA | music by NOBUO NAKAHARA

Uncharacteristically happy for a Yapoos (or Togawa in general?) song, I think, this is probably my favorite song of HYS and a really good way to end the album.

Translation and notes under the cut:

“Long time no see, clouds of pure white
In fact, I could say the same of the sky
Long time no see”

I am as I was before –
We broke up, and I was alone again (1)
And when I looked up at the sky I realized
That I was stronger than I thought

You really were kind
And even after breaking up, I’ll still like you
A blue sky, and clouds after the rain
In the end, I’ll live for a long time

The flowers of all the trees speak to me
They’re red flowers – red flowers
And I know I’m not alone

Because I’ve got friends
I’ve got family
And when I need him
I’ve got God

“And as I held myself back from crying
The flower petals fluttered about instead”

Strange times, starting from today
Times without you, times I can’t believe
The sun in the afternoon sky shines bright
When I’m alone again, my true feelings come out

Better days will come again
And with them, flowers
Red flowers, red flowers
I’m not alone
Because I’ve got friends
And I’ve got family
And when I need him
I’ve got God

1: Togawa uses hitori in Japanese here, which when written distinctly means alone, but is also a homonym of the word for ‘one person,’ which is written with different kanji.
