YUMI MATSUTOYA – MY LOVER IS SANTA CLAUS [KOIBITO GA SANTA CLAUS] (1980)

lyrics and music by YUMI MATSUTOYA

This, along with the already-translated “Christmas Eve,” are the gold standards of Japanese Christmas songs. I’d never heard this one before, but it’s good enough. At the very least I can relate to any song about wanting to fuck Santa Claus or Santa Clausian figures.

Translation and notes under the cut:

A while back, the stylish lady who lived next to me
On Christmas Day, she said to me
“Tonight, when it gets to be 8 o’clock
Santa’s turning up at my house.”

“That’s wrong! That’s a story from picture books!”
I said, and she winked at me
“But, you know, when you become an adult
You’ll understand too, sooner or later!”

My lover is Santa Claus
He really is Santa Claus
Hurtling past whirlwinds
My lover is Santa Claus
A tall Santa Claus
Who came from that snowy town

Since then, how many winters have come and gone?
But yet I’m still thinking of her words
One day, Santa brought me along to that far-away town for good

That’s it! When it gets to be tomorrow,
I’ll understand it too, no doubt

My lover is Santa Claus
He really is Santa Claus
Carrying presents in his arms
My lover is Santa Claus
A cold-looking Santa Claus
Who’ll come in from that snowy town
My lover is Santa Claus
He really is Santa Claus
Hurtling past whirlwinds
My lover is Santa Claus
A tall Santa Claus
Coming to my house

My lover is Santa Claus
He really is Santa Claus
Carrying presents in his arms
My lover is Santa Claus
A cold-looking Santa Claus
Who’ll come in from that snowy town
My lover is Santa Claus
He really is Santa Claus
Hurtling past whirlwinds
My lover is Santa Claus
A tall Santa Claus
Coming to my house
