THE BLUE HEARTS – WHEN THE BOMBS DROP [BAKUDAN GA OKKOCHIRU TOKI] (1987)

lyrics and music by MASATOSHI MASHIMA

A song of the Blue Hearts’ seminal self-titled first album, it has a welcome political bent to it. I don’t have much to say other than I’ve been humming it a lot this week.

Translation and notes under the cut:

Even though no one wants it
Even though no one is happy for it

When the bombs drop
Saying nothing
When the bombs drop
Is accepting it all

Even though I want to live freely
Even though everyone should live happily

When the bombs drop
My freedom is murdered
When the bombs drop
All the good luck ends
There are too many useless things (1)

Adult or child, they don’t care!
Right or left, they don’t care!

When the bombs drop
The angels won’t sing
When the bombs drop
All of our futures will die
There are too many useless things

1: ‘Useless things’ here refers to bombs and weapons, or perhaps to narrow views and political divisions. Or, maybe both! It’s not entirely clear, so I just rendered it literally.
